AbbVie CEO and credential issues

To contact us Click HERE
I have been remiss in posting recently, so I missed posting about this news about the Abbott pharma spin-off, AbbVie and its new CEO's resume troubles last month. But yesterday's comments about fibbing on one's résumé reminded me. From Crain's Chicago Business last month:
Abbott Laboratories misstated the education credentials of Richard Gonzalez, the executive tapped to head its pharmaceutical spinoff, in at least nine regulatory filings between 2002 and 2007, Crain's has found.
Mr. Gonzalez did not receive a bachelor's degree in biochemistry from the University of Houston, nor a master's degree in biochemistry from the University of Miami, contrary to claims in Abbott's filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission when the longtime company executive was a director. He retired from Abbott as president and chief operating officer in 2007 but returned two years later.
In October, Mr. Gonzalez was named CEO of AbbVie, which is projected to have $18 billion in annual sales after it is spun off later this year. Without a college degree, he seemingly would be a rarity among CEOs of major corporations.
What to say about this? Abbott claims that it was an error by administrative staff that allowed the error/mistake/lie (?) to become public record. It's beyond the scope of this blog to determine whether the error was intentional or not (I am sure someone has been desperately searching for copies of Mr. Gonzalez's resume from the early 1980s.)

Part of me thinks that this is not a huge deal. Mr. Gonzalez is from a time where it was not uncommon for people to join companies with simply a high school degree and work their way up to the top. (And there's an argument to be made -- what should we do with our educational system that this could be the case in the future? A debate for another time, and probably another blog.) Surely, his position as CEO is based on his performance as a manager and administrator.

But, of course, this can be seen as the very best fruits of credential fabulism. You fib a little to get into the door, and then you work your way to the top on your own merits!

Readers, can you split this baby?

One of the best parts of any of the scientific Nobel Prize is the human stories that arise. I really enjoyed Carmen Drahl's interview of novelist Cheryl Renée Herbsman, the daughter of 2012 chemistry Nobelist Professor Robert Lefkowitz:
CD: Growing up, what kinds of things did you hear from your father about what he worked on?
CRH: Growing up, I don’t think my siblings and I necessarily understood what our father was researching. We knew it had to do with receptors, but that might have been the full extent of our understanding. Sometimes he would talk at dinner about whether the research was going well or not. Occasionally he would take us to the lab with him on a Saturday morning, where we would have wheeled desk-chair races and explore the walk-in refrigerators. Often, we would hear him dictate papers into his Dictaphone. The words didn’t mean much to us. But I remember my younger sister writing up “scientific papers” of her own with a lot of important-sounding made-up words. My dad always ended the dictation by saying, “RJL etc.” So my sister ended hers with her initials, etc., as well.
Some of the happiest memories I have of my childhood are going to my engineer father's workplace and wandering amongst the blueprints and computer terminals. (Also, the massive cups of super-concentrated hot chocolate that he would make me.)

I look forward to the day when I can take my kids to work with me on the weekend (safely, of course. They don't make steel-toed boots in kids' size, I don't think.)

Go on over there and read it.

So Matt Hartings of ScienceGeist and I got into a fairly heated Twitter debate about the 2012 Nobel Prize in Chemistry (awarded to Professors Lefkowitz and Kobilka for their work on GPCRs).

So I invited Matt to give me a call via Skype yesterday so we could discuss our differences, and we recorded the results -- enjoy:

By now, the traditional apologies for sound quality, etc. It's been lightly edited for ums, ahs and my incredibly halting speech. If you want a summary, Matt had better, more substantive arguments in general, and dealt with my counter-arguments easily. He will be using his persuasive powers to round up synthetic chemists to toil in protein crystallography laboratories.

0-4:00: Introduction
4:00: Did Lefkowitz and Kobilka do chemistry?
10:30: CJ's concerns about the trend of biochemical Nobelists
16:30: Whither the chemical enterprise?
24:15: The Dominance of Biochemistry
28:28: Will organic chemists ever win a Nobel Prize ever again?
30:30: Matt's "Ratatouille" analogy
32:00: CJ asks, "How much of bench-level molecular biology is chemistry?"
35:15: Matt gets CJ to cry uncle with the classic #debatefail of "I wasn't arguing that."
40:00: A long digression on the breadth of chemistry as a field
45:10: Matt does an excellent Carl Sagan impression, talking about the "supernova of chemistry."
47:30: Is it time for the Chemistry Diaspora? Matt: No.

San Diego Tours - Getting to Know San Diego More

There is a lot to see in San Diego. Even the locals have to admit that they have not been to all the great places that San Diego tours offer to tourists and visitors. San Diego has quite a population, being the third largest city in the state of California and the eighth in the whole of the United States. A tour of the city can take a day or more so that if you pick on the available San Diego tours package, be ready for the amount of time it would take you. There would be no problem though whether the tour will take so much of your time because the places to see are worth visiting.

Choosing the San Diego Tours

1. The Grand Tour of San Diego is a complete tour of the city including cruising along the Harbor Cruise to get the chance to view the wonderful harbor and skyline of the city. Different locations will be visited for at least thirty minutes. The tour would not be complete without shopping at Avenida Revolucion in Tijuana for the remainder of the day.
2. A tour of Baja Coast and Ensenada will lead you to the captivating Mexican seaport town. The breathtaking sights of the shoreline will be worth the tour plus the views of the all-natural rocky terrain and of course shopping in the local area at super affordable prices.
3. If you want to experience an amphibious sightseeing tour, then you should take the San Diego Duck Tour. The vehicle can take you to land and water safely. It is quite an experience having to travel along the Big Bay at the same time listening to expert narration of its history and some stories of sailors.
4. A trip to Sea World can make you experience a face-to-face encounter with dolphins, sharks and even polar bears, bats and more. They have rides that can plunge and twists to your hearts delight.

The Inclusives of a Package Tour

Generally, San Diego tours offered by different hotels or other related agencies include:

Pickup from the hotel and return after the tour on an air-conditioned transportation.
Lunch with complimentary drink.
Professional guide who can lead you in touring around the town and giving informative notes on the side.
Discounts on souvenir items and trinkets.
Admission ticket to recreational parks is usually included.

Tips When Going on a San Diego Tour

1. Always bring a camera. The San Diego Tours may not be within your plans in the next five or ten years, or it may not be among your plans at all. So take the best shots and treasure every photo opportunity you may have.
2. Always bring with you a widely accepted proof of identification such as one's birth certificate for U.S. Citizens and passports for non-citizens so that cases of reentry to the country will post no problem at all.
3. Route can change without prior notice depending on the traffic situation and the weather so you should always be prepared for an alternative.

Why You Should Be Buying Apartments in Today's Market

Why You Should Be Buying Apartments in Today's Market

1. 1031 Exchange Opportunity - If you have a low basis property you can utilize IRS tax code 1031 to defer tax on the sale and acquire a replacement property that can enhance cash flow and provide a higher return.

2. Attractive Purchase Prices - Prices are down some 10-30% from the "bubble market" of (2003-2006).

3. Historically Low Financing Costs - The federal government's stimulus efforts have kept interest rates extremely low, making the cost of debt service exceptionally attractive. Qualified investors can take advantage of today's low interest rates to bolster cash flow and lock in better long-term investment returns.

4. Inflation Hedge - With lead economists predicting that inflation will increase at some point in the future, hard assets, like apartments, can provide a hedge against the declining value of money in an inflationary environment. Historically, rental rates tend to rise in inflationary periods.

5. Yield - Financial Institutions are paying very low yields on money market accounts and other conservative investments. In contrast, many apartment complexes are generating returns in 6-9% range, providing considerably better yields than many other competing investments.

6. Less Competition- Foreign ownership of U.S. Investment in real estate is increasing. The lower value of the dollar has made U.S. real estate an even more attractive bargain. These trends increase demand, which will drive up prices.

7. Most Desirable Product Class - Demand for multi-family rentals has increased as foreclosures have mounted and there is little new multi-family construction in the pipeline to meet such increased demand. As a result, multi-family rents are increasing and many experts project this trend to accelerate.

8. Real Estate is Local - Despite national statistics about real estate, investors should be aware that real estate is local and supply/demand and investment returns are determined by local market conditions. San Diego County's geography is ideal for apartment buildings. The county is surrounded by borders; to the south is Mexico, to the north is Camp Pendleton, to the west is the Pacific Ocean and mountains to the east. With that being said, add the political red tape and the high cost of development in California. With San Diego's geography, political landscape and socioeconomics it is clear why demand consistently rises. The result is restricted supply with an enormous demand for housing.

**PricewaterhouseCoopers and Reis survey showed San Diego to have the lowest vacancy rate (3.9%) of any metropolitan area in the United Stated in June 2011.

APARTMENT REALTY GROUP (ARG) is a leading multi-family property investment sales team in SAN DIEGO COUNTY and the SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA Region. EWaste By The Numbers - How Much Isn't Disposed of Properly

To contact us Click HERE
Click Here for waste recycling facilities

Electronic waste or eWaste is basically any piece of electrical equipment that is discarded improperly. That is very vague and broad, but you get the picture. The amazing thing about this term is that it was something that was rarely discussed years ago. Even going back further, it didn't even exist! But now as we are entering into a new generation and a future where eWaste is going to continue to grow unless we learn to control it, it is becoming more critical to properly dispose of this waste. Not that people aren't aware of the fact it should be recycled but I think the problem lies in the lack of information about peoples disposal. When was the last time you knew what to do with your old laptop? I don't know about you but I still have one sitting in my closet. Oh not to mention my four cell phones too...

The amount of eWaste disposed of improperly at a glance is extremely overwhelming. Now I wish I was able to tell you something to make you believe otherwise. But until people become more aware of what to do with eWaste or where to dispose of various types of electronic waste, these numbers will not change.

Let us take a look at some of the numbers published by the http://www.epa.gov a few years back that outline how much electronic waste was discarded and not recycled properly:

- 41.1 million desktops and laptops
- 31.9 million computer monitors
- 400 million total units
- Over 3 million tons total
- 20-50 million tons worldwide
- Only 13.6% was recycled

To paint a picture let us take a look at the two cities where I have resided for the majority of my life, San Diego and New Jersey (I choose the whole state because my home town is so small). I began by performing a Google search to see what options for eWaste recycling are available in San Diego County. To my knowledge there are approximately 42 electronic waste recycling facilities in the San Diego area. These facilities will allow you to properly dispose of the following types of waste:

- Cell phones, PDAs, pagers
- Computer monitors
- Computer software disks
- Computers/CPUs
- Laptop computers
- Photocopiers
- Printers/scanners/fax machines
- Stereos/radios/MP3 players or iPods
- Telephones/answering machines
- Televisions (including plasma and LCD)
- VCRs/DVD players
- Video game consoles

Now in my home state New Jersey, let us look at the results that Google provided. In the entire state there are only 9 electronic waste recycling facilities! That is only 21% of what just San Diego County alone has. Not even the entire state! I found that completely astonishing being that NJ is one of the most populated states in the United States. Now I am not going to claim that my hometown state is one of the most forward thinking states but I am sure it is leaps and bounds above many others. So if San Diego is on the progressive forward side of the spectrum and NJ is on the lower end imagine how many other states, cities, or counties out there have even less options for eWaste recycling? This needs to change and hopefully in due time it will!

Please feel free to share the initiatives and efforts of your local town. I'd love to hear what others are doing in taking steps forward.

My thoughts on journalism

To contact us Click HERE
"Journalism is printing what someone else does not want printed: everything else is public relations." - George Orwell

I saw this quote today on FaceBook and it got me thinking. I would have to respond: "not necessarily."

Webster defines journalism as:
1a : the collection and editing of news for presentation through the media b : the public press c : an academic study concerned with the collection and editing of news or the management of a news medium 2a : writing designed for publication in a newspaper or magazine b : writing characterized by a direct presentation of facts or description of events without an attempt at interpretation c : writing designed to appeal to current popular taste or public interest  Public relations, on the other hand, according to Webster is: "the business of inducing the public to have understanding for and goodwill toward a person, firm, or institution." Journalism - in my opinion - is the collection and reporting of news, features and sports. A journalist acts as the eyes and ears of the general public. Yes, sometimes the subject may be what someone (usually the governement) does not want the public to know, as Orwell implies. One incident comes to mind. In fall of 2007 I reported - as SolancoNews.com - on the sleeping guards at Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station nearby. In short, a whistleblower named Kerry Beal, who was also a security officer working for the Wackenhut Corporation, told his supervisor about the sleeping guards in February 2007. When nothing was done and he allegedly was told to be quiet about it, he then videotaped some of the guards sleeping at the power station. He sent the videotape to CBS. It was widely reported and the NRC - the Nuclear Regulatory Commission - then got involved.
The journalists researched the event, attended press conferences and interviewed vaious people involved and reported that information - that public safety information - back to the general public. In this case Orwell would be correct in his statement that "journalism is printing what someone else does not want printed." I am sure the NRC, Peach Bottom and Wakenhut Corporation would have preferred us all to just go away and let them resolve the situation internally. However, this was - from my viewpoint as SolancoNews.com - relevant news to the people of my coverage area. It concerned the safety of everyone as a whole and it concerned the livelihood of several.

There are also times when they media may be asked by government or police officials to report something in the hopes of obtaining a lead or providing security to the public.

Baby Allison is an example of the police wanting help from local journalists. On 31 December 2003 - New Year's Eve - an abandoned infant girl was found in Strasburg Township. The baby was found by Amish schoolchildren in a burn barrel at an Amish school. While the police have determined that this white child is not Amish, they still have little information. The baby's remains have long since been buried elsewhere and the child was called "Baby Allison", as every child deserves a name. Every December the State Police out of Lancaster would send a press release - or simply call - concerning the somber aniversary. The hope is that someday this child's parents will be found.

The point finally is that while Orwell may have been right sometimes, he is incorrect inclusively. Journalism is not just a regurgitation of information, nor is it trying to dig up dirt on persons and companies (at least it should not be). It - as a profession - is the reporting of factual information to many.

Things to Do in San Diego's Balboa Park

To contact us Click HERE

There are many well-known San Diego attractions that you will want to consider when you are planning a visit to this popular Southern California city. Whether you are in the city for business or pleasure, or even if you're a local that needs to entertain out-of-town visitors, you definitely won't run out of things to see. One of the best places you could go -- especially if you like the outdoors -- is Balboa Park.
Although there are plenty of attractions to see, Balboa Park is unique in that it offers a lot of diversions to keep you and your guests busy. Among the various attractions you can see on the park, there are some must-see locations which you should visit to make your sightseeing excursion complete.
One of these "must-see" attractions is the Star Trek exhibition. It contains all the original costumes and props as well as the sets that were used in all series and films of Star Trek. If you are going to get an admission ticket, you would also be granted access to other exhibits on the Air and Space Museum.
If flowers are more to your taste, then the poinsettia display will rank as your number one among the San Diego attractions. The display can be found on the Botanical Building and features more than five hundred poinsettias that were arranged in harmony with the rest of the botanical wonders around which came from all over the world. You do not have to spend anything to see the display because it is for free.
If you are searching for IMAX film among the San Diego attractions, then you can have a single ticket so that you can be admitted to one of the new films on IMAX that are shown on a seamless dome screen which is very modern. If you know of the zoo in San Diego, you would probably visit it too; but if you are going to go there, it is advisable that you go early so that you can avoid the business of the day. One of the unique things to see in the zoo is the Panda Research Station and perhaps you could go there directly.
You may have a long list of other San Diego attractions that are worth seeing, just be sure to save at least a few days of your vacation for exploring Balboa Park and all the sites it has to offer. You won't be disappointed.

Process Wednesday: solids blending and segregation

To contact us Click HERE
A child's delight, a manufacturer's problem.
Credit: zoomdoggle.com
From the pages of Chemical Engineering, an interesting and hilarious demonstration of the difficulties of mixing solids on large-scale by Thomas G. Troxel:
In other applications the sample size subjected to scrutiny is not as clear cut. Take, for example, a box of cereal. In one specific example a manufacturer produced a cereal with a cereal particle and a marshmallow candy particle. The packaging line filled boxes from a series of conveyors that fed a mixture of two components into a gravimetric packaging machine that dispensed the required weight of the blend into each package. The two components of the mixture were of similar size and density and the only blending that occurred was in the handling system along several conveyors and in a surge hopper. Each component was meter onto the conveyor system, at the correct ratio, but there was not a discreet blending process. The manufacturing plants fine tuned their systems to get an acceptable mixture into each box.
In this case, each box was always within weight tolerance for the stated package quantity, but there was no direct control of the components in any box. In an effort to improve quality, a new packaging line was installed that handled each component individually up to the packaging head where each component was weighed in a series of weigh hoppers, and then each box was filled from several hoppers of each component, selected by the packaging system controlled, to control both the proportion of each component and the total weight in a box. This would seem an ideal solution since it would guarantee both accurate package weight and composition. From the producers point of view, they had improved quality by insuring that every package met their quality standard.
However, to everyone's surprise, consumer complaints from packages produced at this plant went up. What the plant had gained in compositional accuracy they had sacrificed in uniformity. Consumers found that individual bowls of cereal poured from the new packages had much wider variations of the two components than boxes filled from the old filling line. ...The new system allowed only about one second from the time the ingredients were separate until they were combined in the package. There was very little opportunity to do any blending, and the result was that some boxes were well-blended while others were segregated.
This doesn't have a ton to do with "classic" process chemistry (how often are raw/fine chemical manufacturers blending solids?) -- I just thought it was kinda funny.

UPDATED: Added "raw/fine" and "classic" to clarify. Formulation and drug delivery, of course, does a lot of solids blending.

Why I am discomfited by today's chemistry Nobel

To contact us Click HERE
Congratulations to Professor Robert Lefkowitz and Professor Brian Kobilka for the 2012 Nobel Prize in Chemistry "for studies of G-protein-coupled receptors." Their biochemical and structural work is groundbreaking and fundamental in nature -- and immediately useful, too. As Derek said, "At least a third of marketed drugs, after all, are GPCR ligands, so their importance is hard to overstate."

There's been a bit of back-and-forth in the chemblogo/Twittersphere about whether or not this is another "biology" prize for the Chemistry Nobel, and whether or not that is a good thing or a bad thing. The most eloquent defenders of the position that it is indeed a good thing include the two most eloquent writers in the chemblogosphere, Derek Lowe and Ash of The Curious Wavefunction. From Derek:
Biology isn't invading chemistry - biology is turning into chemistry. Giving the prize this year to Lefkowitz and Kobilka takes us from the first cloning of a GPCR (biology, biology all the way) to a detailed understanding of their molecular structure (chemistry!) And that's the story of molecular biology for you, right there. As it lives up to its name, its practitioners have had to start thinking of their tools and targets as real, distinct molecules. They have shapes, they have functional groups, they have stereochemistry and localized charges and conformations. They're chemicals. That's what kept occurring to me at the recent chemical biology conference I attended: anyone who's serious about understanding this stuff has to understand it in terms of chemistry, not in terms of "this square interacts with this circle, which has an arrow to this box over here, which cycles to this oval over here with a name in the middle of it. . ." Those old schematics will only take you so far.
So, my fellow chemists, cheer the hell up already. Vast new territories are opening up to our expertise and our ways of looking at the world, and we're going to be needed to understand what to do next. Too many people are making me think of those who objected to the Louisiana Purchase or the annexation of California, who wondered what we could possibly ever want with those trackless wastelands to the West and how they could ever be part of the country. Looking at molecular biology and sighing "But it's not chemistry. . ." misses the point. I've had to come around to this view myself, but more and more I'm thinking it's the right one.
In Ash's comments on the prize, he comments that he's tired with this ages-old debate:
I have to say that the whole “But is this chemistry?!” meme is getting quite boring. Binding of a small molecule to a GPCR is as much of a molecular interaction as anything in chemistry. Plus, think about the downstream chemistry that GPCRs do, including phosphorylation and salt-bridge breakage. I thought chemists were supposed to rub their hands with glee at the reduction of biology to chemistry while biologists fret and fume. But I see the opposite, biologists being quite sanguine about proteins being awarded medicine Nobels while chemistry continue to complain about proteins (chemicals!) being awarded chemistry Nobels. As I have said before though, this very bickering shows the astonishing reach and diversity of the field. If you can’t even agree on a definition for your field, well, that means your field is truly omnipresent.
There are a number of questions/complaints that have been raised with this trend in the chemistry Nobels -- here are some that I have heard and agree with:
  • While chemists may have a more-and-more expansive definition of chemistry, do biologists agree with this redefinition/annexation? What have biologists said about this?
    • If we asked Professors Lefkowitz and Kobilka last week if they were chemists, would they have said yes or no? Is this relevant?
  • This is chemistry's one day to bask in the media spotlight. We have emphasized biological chemistry for the 6 of the last 13 Nobels (h/t SeeArrOh). Is this the right mix?
    • What does this trend tell graduate students in other, non-life-science-oriented chemistry fields?
  • If you are using the tools of chemistry to do biology, are you a chemist? If you are not a chemist and yet advance the understanding of chemistry, should you be considered for the chemistry Nobel? (My answer: yes, certainly.)
  • Isn't this just a sign that the Nobels, their strictures and the way they are awarded are a terrible way to highlight scientific merit and achievement? Should judged awards for science look more like the Heisman Trophy or the Westminster Dog Show?
My main complaint against this trend of biology/biologists winning recent chemistry Nobel prizes is that it is beginning to distract from the non-life-sciences aspects of chemistry. Physical chemists, inorganic chemists, analytical chemists, polymer chemists (and yes, organic chemists too!) are all losing this zero-sum game, and missing out on their opportunity to tell the larger public that they exist and why they're important to humanity. We can always rely on the public to be willing to support (and fund!) disease cures and advances in human biology (and they have their own prize for Physiology or Medicine!), but gaining public acceptance or recognition for these other (more fundamentally chemistry?) fields is much more difficult. I think that's why I wince a little bit when it's yet another life scientist that gets to step up to the mike.

Good morning! Between October 9 and October 10, there were 33 new positions posted on the ACS Careers website. Of these, 9 (27%) are academically connected and 13 (40%) are from Kelly Scientific Resources.

Camden, SC: Invista is looking for a B.S./M.S./Ph.D. laboratory manager for its polymer laboratory. Looks like a lot of analytical work.

Cleveland, OH: Promerus LLC is looking for a M.S./Ph.D. NMR chemist; they're a polymer/packaging company, looks like. 10+ years experience, industrial experience desired.

Chemistry Nobel qualified: SRI International is searching for a Ph.D. protein biochemist for a position in Harrisonburg, VA. Looks like PI-level qualifications desired. Strong mass spectrometry experience wanted.

Philadelphia, PA: CPS, Inc. needs a agriculturally-oriented formulator. B.S./M.S./Ph.D. desired, 5-10 years industrial experience. Rheology, agricultural biotechnology desired. Pay decent-ish: 70k-105k. (Okay, maybe not? Seems low.)

How much of people's resume/CVs are checked?

One of the recurring themes of fabulists is how often they fake their credentials to gain their positions. One of my favorite ones is the 2009 case where a Texas A&M administrator claimed to be a former Navy SEAL. From the Austin Statesman:
Texas A&M;'s No. 3 administrator presented himself as a warrior-scholar: a former Navy SEAL with a doctorate from Tufts University. But records obtained by The Bryan-College Station Eagle indicate that Alexander Kemos never was part of the elite fighting force, and Texas A&M; officials confirmed Friday that he doesn't have a doctorate or even a master's degree, which was a posted requirement for the $300,000-a-year position as the top adviser to Texas A&M; President R. Bowen Loftin. Kemos resigned Friday morning, the day after he was confronted by Loftin in Maine, where they were vacationing.
So it comes as no surprise to anyone that Annie Dookhan, the dry-labbing chemist, was caught giving herself a master's degree in chemistry. From Carmen's article in C&EN:
Her résumé lists a master’s degree in chemistry from the University of Massachusetts, Boston*, but she does not hold that credential according to school officials.
Isn't it time that someone came up with a way of checking all the educational credentials that people report in their résumé and CV? If LinkedIn (for example) were to offer a "confirmation" checkmark the way that Twitter does with celebrities, I would think that jobseekers would be forced to verify their credentials (for a nominal fee, of course.) Are there résumé checking services? That'd would be a cheap way to avoid credential fabulists (or at least filter out the dumb ones...)

Readers, ever seen people claim to have things on their CVs that were not true?

Why You Should Be Buying Apartments in Today's Market

To contact us Click HERE
Why You Should Be Buying Apartments in Today's Market

1. 1031 Exchange Opportunity - If you have a low basis property you can utilize IRS tax code 1031 to defer tax on the sale and acquire a replacement property that can enhance cash flow and provide a higher return.

Let La Jolla Realtors Help You Find a Great Home

To contact us Click HERE

Living in the great community of La Jolla is a dream, but finding the right home can be quite difficult if you are trying to do it on your own. The area is home to a number of properties, but you will have to consider a number of different things when you are getting ready to buy a new house. Which area of La Jolla is going to be best for you? How much money do you have to spend? What size home do you need? These are only a few of the questions that you are going to have to ask, and it can take quite a while to do if you are on your own. Your best option is to enlist the help of La Jolla realtors.

To successfully find the perfect La Jolla home, it is important to work with a local realtor whose office is located in the community. Although the internet gives any average realtor the ability to let you know about new properties that come on the market, local experts can do much more to help you with your search than simply emailing a list of homes for you to consider. Remember, you are not the only person looking to find a home in one of the most coveted zip codes in the country. So to gain the upper hand on your competition, hiring a local realtor is an important first step in the process.

These local realtors can look at your situation and the things that you need from your home, and they will be able to sort through all of the different options to show you the properties that are in your range when it comes to price and your needs. They have knowledge of the area that you probably do not and that non-local realtors certainly lack. They will know more about the schools and the important but slight differences between all the small neighborhoods in the community, as well as local shopping, dining, and everything else that could be important in your decision.

You will have quite a few great choices when it comes to realtors in the area. Willis Allen Real Estate is a family owned business that has San Diego roots dating back to 1914. Gallery Properties is also a locally operated office that's headed by Claudette Berwin, a respected community leader who was elected to the Board of Directors of the La Jolla Village Merchants Association in 2011. Klatt Realty and Klein Real Estate are also locally owned offices with decades of local real estate sales experience. Of course there are also many excellent agents working at Prudential California Realty and Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage. You will find plenty of other real estate offices and the realtors working at them that will be able to help you. Whether you want to own a large family home, a mansion, or a condominium, you can be sure that you can find a realtor that will help you.

All of the above-mentioned real estate offices share one common thing - they are all located in downtown La Jolla Village. This is very important because it means the agents working there can participate in the local caravan each Wednesday, attend meetings at REBA and are in constant contact with the other expert realtors who live and breathe La Jolla real estate every single day.

A number of different things make La Jolla a wonderful place to live. La Jolla is an affluent community that has great schools, restaurants, and attractions. You are close to the beach, and you are only a short drive from all that San Diego has to offer. With all of the reasons to move there and buy a home, it's time that you contacted La Jolla realtors to help you on your search for a new property!

LaJollaBlueBook.com has been serving the La Jolla community since 1937 as your one and only community directory. Visit LaJollaBlueBook.com to find La Jolla realtors, La Jolla house painters, interior designers and more.

Great Neighborhood to Consider When Looking for a Home

Carmel Valley is an ideal location for the professional person working in the Tech Industry and also the Medical Professionals working at the close by Scripps Hospital as well as other Health and Medical Research facilities. It is also home to the ever-increasing Bio-Tech industry. There are many high-rise office complexes within a few minutes commute that house companies like the famous Qualcomm Corporation.

Carmel Valley is named after the Carmelite Sisters of Mercy who built a monastery and established a dairy farm many years ago. Before that, people known as the La Jolla and Ipai people lived here. Cultural artifacts have been found along the banks of the Carmel Creek. After the Gold Rush, the miners came south and finding this a pleasant location decided to settle and build homes for themselves. Many years later ranchers travelled south bringing their horses cattle and established farms growing beans and corn. This once known agricultural area has become one of the most sought after locations in the North County of San Diego.

It has become a family community with the now well-known award-winning schools offering a wide range to suit all nationalities. Education is handled by the Del Mar Union, Solana Beach and San Dieguito school districts as well as a number of prestigious private schools. There are places of worship to suit all religious persuasions. The newly developed and popular Athletic Club and Recreation Center is enjoyed by the local community who have a choice too of golf courses close by, private and municipal, The Grand Del Mar Golf Resort being one of the top golf courses and resorts in San Diego County. The Torrey Pines Golf Course is close by and home to the PGA tournament.

This pleasant and peaceful community is located close to the ocean and a little north of the City of San Diego. The estimated population in Carmel Valley is about 37,000 and home to a wide demographic society. Home prices range from, Condo's $200,000 to large homes of 2 Million. Pardee Homes, Shea and Davidson are some of the well-known construction companies that have established most of the neighborhoods.

Attractions within about 25 minutes are the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club and Del Mar Fair, Balboa Park, San Diego Zoo, Sea World and San Diego. Carmel Valley is a great community close to shops, restaurants, beach and down-town.

There is an extensive trail system for walking and bike riding. City Planner Kevin Lynch wanted to develop an area and leave the canyons untouched which is where many of the trails run. Most of the homes were built on the mesa tops. Torrey Pines Reserve is one of the most popular with breath-taking views over the ocean and if you look carefully you will see dolphins playing in the surf and in the winter season whale spouts are easily visible.

This neighborhood can be enjoyed by all as it offers houses for sale and also is listed in the San Diego Properties for Rent publications.

I am a San Diegan of many years having moved here from South Africa. I've been a Realtor all of my career and I do enjoy all that Real Estate encompasses. I have varied interests and hobbies and would like to share them through the internet. http://www.CarmelValleyZip.com

Real Estate Listings Map - Find the Right Property in a Location of Your Choice

To contact us Click HERE
Click Here for real estate listings

Most of us dream of owning a fabulous piece of property in a location of our choice. For some, it could be a suburban house close to their workplace, for others, it could mean a condominium close to the city center. Finding the right home or property is a difficult task because the ideal combination of location, size, type of property, and number of rooms is hard to come by. That is, unless you use a real estate listings map.

Nothing but the Best

A real estate listings map ensures that a homebuyer can find the perfect home in the perfect neighborhood. You do not have to compromise on your choices. If you are looking for a 5 bedroom, 3 bathroom home in a certain neighborhood and none are currently listed for sale, you can save your search criteria and receive an email alert when a new home is listed for sale that meets all your criteria.

When the homebuyer looks for houses through a real estate listings map, he or she can isolate the location of their choice and take the search forward from there. For example, if a person is looking for a home in San Diego, California, they can simply click on that area the map and see the location of each home for sale in the selected map area.

The search can be focused even more precisely. Within a MLS San Diego search, you can select an area on the map that outlines a specific neighborhood near friends or family, work or good schools or any other geo criteria you might have. Other great areas for beach living include homes in Long Beach, Long Beach, and Santa Barbara.

Location would not be the only factor when a homebuyer purchases a house. Therefore, once you have selected a location on the real estate listings map, you will be able to set the search criteria for the following:

  • Price range
  • Number of bedrooms and bathrooms
  • Size of the house
  • Type of property (residential/single family etc.)
  • Size of garage (2,3 or more stalls)
  • Pool or no pool
  • And More

In addition to this data, the searcher will also be able to see the name of a realtor they can contact for more information or to schedule a showing. Therefore, if you are looking to buy property of your choice in a location you like, the easiest and fastest way is to search through a listings map.

Convenient to Use

Using a real estate listings map offers other advantages. Instead of wasting precious time driving around neighborhoods quizzing homeowners, or calling half a dozen realtors only to be told that their offerings do not match your requirements, the buyer can simply browse through the listings online in the areas where they want to buy a home.

Along with greater choice, a listings map also enables buyers to compare price and other features before they buy a house. This is the best way to short list preferred real estate before you contact the realtors.

In addition to obtaining highly localized information about real estate, the buyer also learns something about the real estate market in a particular area. When you search for houses in a specific region, you learn about the average price of a three-bedroom house, for example; or, how much you are expected to pay for a modest-sized home close to a major street.

A real estate listings map offers multiple benefits - ease of use, a comprehensive inventory of homes for sale, and a good deal of education regarding local real estate and community information. It is a handy tool a homebuyer or real estate investor can use to locate the perfect property.

Temecula is a city in southwest California. The population of the area is approximately 100,097 people. Temecula is famous for having over 35 wineries and 3,500 acres of vineyards in which wine is produced. The wine country is in the east of the old town Temecula where they have the annual Temecula valley balloon and wine festival. This is held near Lake Skinner and is a bug tourist attraction. The festival includes live entertainment, wine tasting and even hot air balloon rides. Many of the local wineries are represented at this festival. It is after all, just for the wine.

Many people who visit San Diego want to go for a Temecula wine tour and rightfully so. The wineries are not only just where wine is made they are very historical sites too. A great way to go for a Temecula wine tour is by hiring a limo service. It is a treat for a tourist. The Temecula wine tours give you great knowledge of the wineries but it does not stop there. The tour guides have knowledge of the restaurants you should eat at and of the hotels and resorts. The wonderful thing about these tours is that they will show you all of the things you need to see most. For example, only on a Temecula wine tour will you find out all the different wines and there are many. There are the best wines but it does not end there. There are also reserve wines, signature wines, award-winning wines and even award-winning champagnes. There are so many different types of wines that you will be able to see and taste on these tours.

Apart from the wines, there are valleys with breath-taking views. There are parks and picnic tables for you to enjoy a day out in the wonderful sunny weather during your Temecula wine tour. The trees provide shade as well so the atmosphere of the parks is wonderful for a lazy lunch in the sun. Tours also provide the option of allowing guests to stay at the wineries for a few days. The tour guides can direct you to the best hotels and the most luxurious spas in the area all for your comfort and enjoyment.

Temecula wine tours are extremely fun. There may even be ways to make it better. For one thing, you could hire a limousine for the tour. This will ensure you travel not only in style but in comfort. The limousines offer you a chance to have fun not only the destination, but to have fun on the way as well. It can be the perfect way to enjoy your trip to the winery which may otherwise be drab or boring. There are many services which specialize in wine tours; those are the ones you will want to look for so that you can enjoy the tour completely. If you are hoping to tour in a limousine, you will have to make sure the limo is for the whole tour and not just for transportation.

There are many services which rent out a limo and give you a Temecula wine tour. You just need to make sure you pick the right one. The best option would be to pick a service that specializes in the Temecula wine tours. This way, you will have all the arrangements worked out for you by the company itself. You will be able to enjoy the tour and services without having to worry about anything but having a great day out. Limousines usually offer you beverages in the car itself, but remember if you are going for a tour of a winery, you will have a lot of drinks later, so do not fill up on the way there.

Wine Tours Limo services are always worth the money invested. In comparison with an ordinary taxi, one can experience royal outlook through the limo services. It not only offers greater space, but also a not so expensive ride as well.

That's an uncomfortable set of facts...

To contact us Click HERE
From an interesting article in Bloomberg Businessweek on student loans and the cost of college:
So maybe the real problem is that credentialism has trumped learning. That drives people to get degrees simply to displace others who don’t have degrees, says Richard Vedder, who directs the Center for College Affordability and Productivity. He notes that the U.S. has more than 100,000 janitors with college degrees and 16,000 degree-holding parking lot attendants. (emphasis mine)
Political scientist Charles Murray would get rid of the bachelor’s degree altogether. In an Intelligence Squared U.S. debate last October in Chicago, he said education is or at least ought to be a lifelong process for everyone, diploma holders or not. “We are all engaged in the same process,” Murray argued. “We are not divided into professionals and service workers or blue-collar workers. We all start out as apprentices. We become journeymen, and we all strive to become master craftsmen.”
Yikes. No one likes credentialism; perhaps the problem is the cost of higher education? Dunno.

Celebrating with Dulce de Leche Cupcakes & #CoolWhipFrosting

To contact us Click HERE
As I get older, I realize more and more how important it is to show your love for friends and family members often and to celebrate everyday accomplishments - not just big holidays or events. This has been on my mind a lot lately since my husband's been working long hours on a project and we haven't gotten to spend a lot of time together. So, when he mentioned his project was starting to wrap up and he might actually get home at a reasonable hour, I decided to celebrate by baking up some yummy dulce de leche-filled cupcakes.

When it comes to holidays and special occasions, I usually make my own cakes or other desserts from scratch. But for a weeknight celebration, I'm more than happy to go "semi-homemade." For this recipe, I picked up the new light and fluffy Cool Whip® Frosting:

And some other baking-made-easy goodies:

You can check out my full shopping adventure here on Google+.

If you're a regular reader, you know I did some prep work ahead of time by making my homemade dulce de leche for filling the cupcakes. I suggest making that the night before, or at least in the morning so it has time to cool. The rest of the recipe comes together fairly quickly.

Dulce de Leche Cupcakes
(Makes 12)

Ingredients:
1 box Betty Crocker® butter yellow cake mix
1 cup water
1/3 c. butter, softened
3 eggs
1 recipe homemade dulce de leche
1 tub vanilla Cool Whip Frosting

Method:
Preheat oven to 350°F. Line 2 12-tin cupcake pans with paper liners.
In a large bowl, beat cake mix, water, butter and eggs until smooth.
Divide batter evenly into 24 cupcake tins (filling each about 2/3 full).
Bake at 350°F for 17-22 minutes, or until toothpick inserted comes out clean.
Cool completely. (Note that while a box makes 24 cupcakes, you only need 12 for the rest of this recipe. I suggest freezing the other 12 for another day!)

Once cupcakes are cool, using a knife or cupcake corer to make a well in the center of each cupcake:

Using a pastry bag or a spoon, fill the wells with dulce de leche. (If your dulce has been in the refrigerator, warm it up a little first to get it to spread more easily.)

Using a pastry bag and a large star tip, pipe vanilla Cool Whip Frosting on the top of each cupcake:

Using the back of a spoon, drizzle some of the remaining dulce de leche over the top of each cupcake:

Refrigerate until ready to serve. When you are ready to indulge, get ready for this gooey goodness:

The rich dulce de leche goes perfectly with the light, airy Cool Whip Frosting (which to me, tastes like the "whipped" frosting they use on bakery cakes).

My husband made it home even earlier than expected (6:30 is amazing as of late!) and definitely enjoyed his pre-dinner dessert:
